FAQ

When is the best time to visit?

You can enjoy game drives in Masai Mara all year around. Most of Kenya has warm sunny days, with temperatures rarely exceeding 27°C (80°F), and dropping to 10°C (50°F) at night. This makes you feel quite chilly, and we call it a two-blanket climate.

Although Kenya is an all-year-round resort, if you want cloudless skies and tropical heat, try and visit the country in December, January or February.

The long rains come in April and May and the short rains in November. However the rain is not constant and is interspersed with sunny days, or at least with sunny hours.

June and July are also dull and cool, however June to October is the period when many tourists from the northern hemisphere travel abroad for summer holidays. This season coincides with the northward migration of wildlife from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Masai Mara. Tourists and wildebeest then rendezvous on this great scenic natural stage - the plains of Masai Mara.

Do I need to take a yellow fever vaccination?

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving in Kenya from an infected area, but no other vaccinations or immunisations are required by law in Kenya, although some are advisable.

What is the baggage allowance for domestic flight in Kenya?

Baggage allowance is strictly 15kg per passenger, inclusive of hand luggage in soft bags. Furthermore, a large suitcase might be refused by the airline company and excess baggage will be charged at prevailing rates and only carried subject to space availability, so that it is advisable to carry a small soft bag less than 67x51cm.

What is the weather in Masai Mara like?

It is often said that Kenya is a cold country with a hot sun, as the blend of high altitudes and tropical sun make for a unique and variable climate. This should be kept in mind when packing for a visit. Both temperatures and climate vary drastically from region to region and even throughout a single day. Basically the traveller should come prepared for hot, cold, wet and dusty conditions.
